Of these three options, option #3 seems the least useful, since it doesn't
really seem to me to help establish what the arrow is pointing at and how
to position it relative to some known point. Option #2 seems the most
natural of the two remaining options, though it's not without problems:
how should the advance width of the glyphs be handled when the arrow
points leftwards from the origin? In general we want to avoid having
zero-width glyphs in SMuFL-compliant fonts, as this can cause
rendering/measuring problems in some APIs.

Thoughts from others in the community are very welcome!
