In my experience, the comma-like and tick-like breath marks are used
interchangeably in vocal/choral music, and are roughly as common as each
other. As I say, this is based on nothing more than my own experience of
the music I have sung and conducted over the years.
It was my impression that the comma-like mark is also used in instrumental
music, while the tick-like mark is more or less only used in vocal music,
hence the current grouping in ranges.
In a sense the grouping is arbitrary, and the main thing is that the
appropriate glyphs are included *somewhere*, but perhaps it would please
you if the tick-like mark is moved to the 'Holds and pauses' range to join
its brethren in a range that is agnostic about whether or not such
markings are idiomatic to particular instruments.
I am also happy to add the upbow-like breath mark described by Peter in
his reply to this thread, and likewise suggest that it too goes in the
'Holds and pauses' range rather than the 'Vocal techniques' range.
