[smufl-discuss] Re: Diamond clusters

Knut Nergaard
Hi, Daniel!

Sorry for bringing this up once again (apparently I feel strongly about it), but looking through the individual notes range in Bravura Text, I see that the shortened stems of 2,75 spaces have been retained in this font as well. As a result, these can’t be used under normal circumstances (which require a full length stem).

There hasn’t been any participation from the general community in this thread, so I suspect that I might be alone in having issues with the registration and proportions of these glyphs. In case I’m wrong, might I suggest the following changes in a future version of SMuFL:

1. Revert the recommended glyphs in this range back to their pre version 1.12 counterparts.
2. Include stylistic alternates or additional recommended versions of these glyphs with shorter stems, and with noteheads sitting on the baseline.

This way both scoring and text entry situations will be covered, and everybody’s happy.

Sorry for being a bit slow, but since these glyphs now are

they also be positioned differently relative to the baseline like I
asked in a previous thread?

Well, at the moment, the guidelines that we have discussed and agreed
state that noteheads should be centred on the baseline in fonts intended
for use in scoring applications. It's not beyond the realm of possibility
that an application might want to use these precomposed glyphs in some
situations, though the SMuFL specification does recommend that notes with
stems, flags, beams etc. should be drawn using a combination of primitive
lines and glyphs, since this is more flexible.

If there is consensus in the community that it would be beneficial to
change the registration of the 'Individual notes' and 'Beamed groups of
notes' ranges in the recommendations for fonts for scoring applications,
I'm open to it.

Daniel
