[smufl-discuss] Re: Fractional time signatures

Knut Nergaard
Daniel,

I have a follow-up question to this issue I posted I while back (see below):

If I were to add stylistic alternates to time signature numbers for use in fractions, I gather it would be correct to scale them similarly to the main TS glyphs (2 spaces high)? I’m asking because these characters are supposed to be displayed at half the size of normal TS numbers, and to scale them at 200% would essentially deviate from the overall principle in SMuFL to scale all characters relative to the staff size.

If stylistic alternates or separate glyphs for this purpose were to be added to SMuFL in the future, it would be preferable for my font to use a similar implementation.

Thanks

Knut Nergaard

Presently there is a small collections of fractions for time
signatures available in SMuFL. These seem to be based on the main TS
numbers, reduced to 50%. Are there any plans to create separate
slots for the fraction numbers?

There are no plans to do this at present, no. The way I have typically
handled this kind of thing in Bravura is to create stylistic alternates
for key glyphs that are optical variants, so should the need arise for
vulgar fractions not permitted by the current set of digits, I would
anticipate adding stylistic alternates for the remaining digits.

You're correct that if you want to create additional digits that are not
included in the core SMuFL character set, you should add them in the
optional glyphs range.
