SMuFL is not intended to support every graphical element required by a music notation application, as this goal is impossible for a font to achieve. Stems, beams, ties, slurs and lines are among the many elements that cannot be supplied by fixed glyphs in a font.
Most applications are expected to use SMuFL only for the fixed-geometry elements of notation, and to draw their own graphics in careful alignment with the SMuFL glyphs. Thus, you might use a filled parallelogram or other approach to draw beams in conjunction with notes.
