The varC clef shape in Lilypond differs from the
normal C clef only through its appearance. Their meanings are
identical.
Where is this clef used? I assume it has been added to LilyPond for
a specific purpose.

I don’t exactly get what ‘combining’ means here.
Visually this is something like the varC clef in Lilypond
without the two ‘bars’ at the left; perhaps these are to be
added separately?
