OK, that's how I had already understood it.

I can't really vote for or against this as I don't know the actual use
(so I'm not actually interested in the features, it's just that I
stumbled over it and would like to finish it properly).
But it *has* been included in LilyPond, and it has been made accessible
explicitly, not as a feature of the font design, but as a selectable
alternative within the font.
Also reading from Knut's comments I'd suggest adding it. Stylistic
alternative would be probably the way to go.
