Hello everybody,
we at capella software follow the SMuFL initiative with great interest,
because we are working on an extension of our own font where we have
also planned use the Private Use Area. A good standard for this goal
would be very welcome.
I have once made a survey of existing microtonal accidentals which
resulted in the collection you can find here:
http://www.capella.de/download/mehr/accidentals.pdfOf course this collection is not complete. At least the persian
accidentals are missing
http://fa.wikipedia.org/wiki/%DA%A9%D8%B1%D9%86http://fa.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D8%B3%D8%B1%DB%8C_%28%D9%85%D9%88%D8%B3%DB%8C%D9%82%DB%8C%29as well as the SMuFL symbols U+E172 to U+E176 of inverted and reversed
accidentals which I haven't seen before yet.
I am not an expert on contemporary microtonal music but I know that
there is no clear standard and that it depends on the composer, which
symbols are used and what their meaning is. Therefore I have tried to
sort the symbols by graphical attributes rather than by musical meaning.
I think this is also how the glyph names should be designed.
Some symbols of my collection could be considered as different styles of
the same thing, like the sharp with an arrow on the left or right stem,
or the triple barred sharp with equal or different bar length.
From the coding point of view one could consider the up and down arrows
also as diacritics. This would save some code points.
I think SMuFL would be a great chance to bring some systematics or at
least documentation into this field.
Hartmut
