That's sort of true, though in fact since it is necessary for there to be
completely separate fonts for use in scoring applications and text-based
applications, due to the incompatible requirements of their metrics, there
is not a completely clear separation in the intention of their use.

You're right that this is a little inconsistent. I will look into
remedying this.

I don't think it's really necessary for SMuFL to attempt to answer that
question: the main job is simply to encode and categorise the glyphs.

Thanks for your reply. Generally speaking, it is true, but when a stylistic alternate is named "Double whole note (breve), single vertical stroke" (and a name of some kind is unavoidable), it rather clear suggests which shape is considered primary and which alternate...
