Yes, as I understand it, this is an option, but unfortunately it is
decidedly non-trivial to write custom tables into OpenType fonts, and it's
also non-trivial to read these values (depending on the APIs available in
the environment used by the consuming application). Furthermore, in
general we are trying to avoid recommendations in the SMuFL specification
that are tied to specific font formats or specifications.

So I agree with your assessment that this is not a practical approach.
