Perhaps I shall repeat my other suggestion, that the font baseline is in
the middle of the em, and it is a middle line of an imaginary 5-lines
staff. Font ascent is then a top of the imaginary staff line and font
descent is a bottom line. Then, these two approaches are equivalent.
I have used this metrics, and have not encountered any problems
(Sibelius and Finale).
Anyway, I think that full-size parentheses should be registered
consistently with cut and common time signs, i.e. centred to the
baseline (I guess it can be better for large time signatures above system).
