[smufl-discuss] Re: Stem item metrics and size of text items

Good, Michael
Hi Daniel,

I apologize for the lack of clarity regarding the size of text items. The
rationale for the dynamics size in Maestro is that dynamics match the size
for all other musical symbols in the font, such as noteheads. Rather than
looking at the combination of an mf in Bravura and an mf in Times New
Roman, the consistency we care more about is between an mf in Bravura and
a whole notehead in Bravura at the same point size.

The current scaling with an x-height of roughly 2 staff spaces is much too
large for this. We would like to see dynamics scaled to fit with the rest
of the musical font at the same point size on the staff. To be consistent,
the same would happen for the D.C./D.S. symbols, though those are much
less used and thus less important.

Currently dynamics would have to be used in a different point size than
any other musical symbol in SMuFL. We would like all symbols in SMuFL to
work together in a notation application at the same point size. This does
mean that combining text and dynamics will require different point sizes
for the text and the dynamics. That's the tradeoff we prefer, since you're
making a font change anyway in that scenario.

Standalone dynamics are also far more common in musical literature than
combined text and dynamics. We would prefer SMuFL to optimize for the more
common case, not the less frequent case.

I hope that clarifies our rationale for this proposed change. I will
consult with Mark about the stem item metrics proposal.

Best regards,
