thank you! these might work also as stylistic alternates since, as you note, in text-based applications they are generally the normal whole and half rests and it might be better to not have them encoded as a separate entity.

In any case, wherever they end up, they’re quite important.  A whole rest in isolation, not placed on a staff in a scoring program needs the bit of staff line or it’s not a whole rest.
