While I have seen unison whole that didn't look quite the same as two
overlapped wholes, the latter may be more common, and sufficient. But if
that is the case, then a recommendation for an overlap offset would seem
to be appropriate, as some fonts may overlap as my picture, with 3
distinct areas of white space, and for others it may be appropriate to
overlap just the (bolder) ends of whole notes. The details of the glyph
in that particular font would impact the exact amount of overlap that is
appropriate, and that would be better chosen by the artist than the
programmer.
