From the practical end of the telescope (or one telescope at least), I've
been trying to find out what support Windows APIs offer for some of the
OpenType features we've been discussing. It appears this support was
introduced in Windows 7, (in the form of the "DirectWrite" API) and
back-fitted (to some extent at least) into Vista, but it is not planned to
make it available in Windows XP.
That will, as far as I can see, rule out use of these features for
applications which want to go on supporting XP. Among Windows users there
are still an awful lot of people using XP, and that situation is not likely
to change particularly soon.
This, therefore, appears to be another factor militating in favour of having
necessary symbols at alternative code points.
